Toby Morse

Bristol reviewer

Toby Morse started his reviewing career as one of the country’s first reviewers of stand-up comedy, writing for The Heckler about comedians like Eddie Izzard when they were still performing in small rooms above pubs, and struggling to devise a new form of reviewing for this new style of performance.

Switching to theatre reviewing, he then wrote for the Bath Chronicle and Venue magazine, and was The Independent’s theatre critic covering the West and South Wales for 8 years.

Subsequently he was lead theatre reviewer for online magazine Bristol 24/7 until the pandemic. He has also done theatre reviews on radio for StarFM, BBC Radio Bristol and Radio 3 (Night Waves).

He is a guest lecturer on review writing for the MA Journalism courses at Cardiff University and the University of the West of England.

The Bristol Post once labelled him “Britain’s harshest critic”.
