Leicester’s Curve theatre is to stage the UK première of Muriel’s Wedding the Musical in 2025.
The musical is based on the 1994 film Muriel’s Wedding which was written and directed by P J Hogan. He has updated his screenplay for the stage.
Original music is written by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall, whose work spans the worlds of musical theatre, opera and Eurovision. The musical includes additional songs by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, which were originally written for ABBA.
Director Simon Phillips said, “I’m thrilled that the team at Leicester Curve have embraced Muriel with the same open heart as the rest of the world. Curve has an enviable track record delivering exciting new musicals and it’s a privilege to be adding Muriel to their list.”
Curve’s chief executive Chris Stafford and artistic director Nikolai Foster commented, “we’re euphoric Muriel is coming to Leicester. We’re looking forward to welcoming acclaimed Australian director Simon Phillips and his phenomenal team to Curve to create the UK première of this film on stage in this all-singing and all-dancing celebration of finding the courage to be your authentic self. It’s equally thrilling P J Hogan has adapted his screenplay for the stage.”
Muriel’s Wedding the Musical had its world première in a co-production with the Sydney Theatre Company in 2017 and returned with an Australian tour two years later.
The Made at Curve and Global Creatures co-production will be choreographed by Andrew Hallsworth. It will run at Curve from Thursday 10 April until Saturday 10 May 2025.
