The Female Warrior

Author(s): John Phillpott Company: Worcester Theatres

Through shot and shell, the red-coated British soldier endured the bloody battlefields of the 18th century. Poor food, the privations of active service and possibly death or injury were the lot of many a man who had taken the King’s shilling.

But incredibly, concealed in the ranks of this male world, there could occasionally be found a woman in disguise. Hannah Snell was one such woman.

Abandoned after her husband is called to serve, she decides to find him by masquerading as a man in uniform. Hannah falls foul of the brutal punishments of the period, fights in battles against the French, and returns to Britain a conquering hero, eventually enjoying national fame on the theatre stage before spending her final days in an asylum.

This is the incredible true tale of Worcester-born Hannah Snell and her unflinching resolve, courage and determination to overcome all odds.
