Customs House in South Shields

During the May half-term holiday (Monday 25 to Friday 29), young people will be taking over the Customs House in South Shields.

There will be an opportunity for an artist under 25 to hold a solo exhibition in the Stairwell Gallery, an outdoor Breakdance Jam, a chance for bands or soloists to perform live on the main stage, a one day film challenge, a one day songwriting workshop and drama residency.

The drama residency, which is free, will be with theatre company The Letter Room and will run from Tuesday to Friday. During the residency, young performers will work to develop their skills in movement and acting, to gain experience of devising theatre in a professional environment and to create and perform a new piece of work based on the theme of Desperate Measures.

The work created will be performed at the end of the residency on Friday 29 May in The Studio.

This will be building on last year’s successful residency in which young actors created a piece of theatre based on the theme, Wishful Thinking. A film from the performance, which gives a flavour of the work, can be seen on YouTube.

The residency lasts from 10:30AM until 4:30PM each day, with the performance at 7:30PM on Friday 29 May.

Those interested in taking part will need to complete an application form which will outline their interests, experience and why they would like to be part of a residency to create new devised work with a professional theatre company.

Applications will need to be sent to Fiona Kelly, Cultural Development Officer, The Customs House by e-mail to [email protected]. The closing date for applications is Friday 8 May at 5PM. Participants need to commit to attend all four days in full, as well as the performance. Applicants will be informed whether they have been successful by Tuesday 12 May.

Details of how to apply for any of the Takeover events are available on the Customs House web site.
