Waterloo East Announces First Season

The new theatre under the railway arches at Waterloo East, the Waterloo East Theatre (see our news story of 23rd June), has announced its first season which opens in September: three performances of Aidan Dooley’s multi-award winning show Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer, which will arrive in London ahead of another world tour; musical comedy Sunset Bitch starring Jessica Martin (8-26 Sept); the London premiere of Edinburgh Festival hit Departure Lounge (27 Sept – 31 Oct) and Being Sellers, Carl Caulfield’s tribute to the celebrated comedian, Peter Sellers, which will play three weeks (2-19 Nov) prior to a New York transfer.

Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer
Written and performed by Aidan Dooley
The life-story of Tom Crean, Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes. Crean was one of the few men to survive three iconic expeditions: Discovery, Terra Nova and Endurance – and served with both Scott and Shackleton.
This multi-award winning show has now played to over a quarter of a million people worldwide, and will open the first-ever season at Waterloo East Theatre with three exclusive dates prior to starting another world tour.

Sunset Bitch
Jessica Martin is Veronique Raymond - self-proclaimed Hollywood legend and diva with a capital D. On the eve of her long-anticipated return to the London stage, she shares her extraordinary journey from rags to riches (and back again), and with a little help from her showbiz pals we discover why she became the Sunset Bitch.
Described as “a musical comedy star of the first magnitude”, Jessica Martin’s hilarious one-woman show (winner of Best Solo Show at the New York Fringe Festival, 2005) will bring much laughter to Waterloo East Theatre for its three-week run.

Departure Lounge
Delayed at Malaga Airport after a week in the sun to celebrate their graduation from school, four less-than-innocent 18 year olds caught between adolescence and adulthood reminisce about their time together. It soon becomes clear that their individual memories of the holiday are at odds, particularly when it comes to romance and the girl on all their minds…. Is she as innocent as we’re lead to think and will the boys friendships hold firm as they all face a coming of age?

Being Sellers
Peter Sellers was celebrated for his ability to transform himself completely into his characters - from Chief Inspector Clouseau to Doctor Strangelove - but who was he and what was the personal cost of his comic genius? David Boyle will bring to life a wealth of memorable characters in Carl Caulfield’s poignant comedy to unmask a tortured Goon.
To mark the thirty-year anniversary of Sellers’ death, Waterloo East Theatre will stage the first revival of Being Sellers, playing for three weeks prior to a New York transfer in November 2010.

Gerald Armin, Artistic Director of Waterloo East Theatre, said, “I’m delighted that we’re now up-and-running, and can’t wait to welcome audiences through the doors. Over the past few months we have received tremendous support from the local community and I hope that, as the newest addition to the incredibly rich cultural landscape of SE1, we will be able to widen the net of choice available to people looking for a brilliant night out. I aim to programme unexpected, exciting and entertaining fare. The only thing I want to be predictable about Waterloo East Theatre is the cost of tickets – always affordable – starting from £10 and we’ll have a ‘pay what you can’ night within the run of every show.”
