Sherman Theatre has announced a special year of events to mark its 50th anniversary.

It includes Gary Owen’s Romeo and Julie, with Callum Scott Howells and Rosie Sheehy in the title roles to be directed by Rachel O’Riordan, and Imrie, a Welsh language story of queerness and difference by Writer in Residence Nia Morais. The Sherman Youth Theatre Festival will also present a new work based on Gary Owen’s Ghost City based in contemporary Wales.

Artistic director Joe Murphy said, “for 50 years, Sherman Theatre has served the audiences, artists and communities of Cardiff and South Wales with work that we feel the whole nation can be proud of. This year is for our audiences, our artists and our communities. It’s a year-long celebration for the people we exist to serve. We’ll look back, we’ll look mostly forward, but we will always work to entertain with exceptional drama, local stories and innovative work.”

Other events in the programme will continue to look forward with new work and celebrate landmark moments in its journey towards becoming a major producing house.
