Scotland Decides/Tha Alba A'taghadh2014

It seems that the Scottish Independence Referendum has all but disappeared behind the abundant daily news from Scotland focused on the Commonwealth Games and the phenomenon that is Edinburgh in August with its Fringe, Book and International Festivals.

The folk at London's Finborough Theatre are not allowing themselves to be distracted however—the Referendum is firmly in their sights with a season of plays to coincide with it running from 2 to 27 September.

Scotland Decides/Tha Alba A'taghadh2014 sees three classic Scottish rediscoveries and a brand new play; of these four, three will receive their English premières:

  • The Flouers O'Edinburgh, an 18th century satire on the Union of Scotland and England by Robert McLellan
  • The Wallace by Sydney Goodsir Smith, a Scots verse drama on the life of 'Braveheart'
  • Jock: Scotland On Trial, a new play by leading 'Yes' campaigner Alan Bissett
  • Little Red Hen, a history of 'Red Clydeside' that asks whether political self-determination is ever achievable without economic independence by John McGrath (staged reading)
