More than 80 ‘school boys’ flocked to The Lowry, from across the north, to audition for a part in Gary Barlow’s new musical The Girls, based on Calendar Girls, which has its première at The Lowry in January.
The young hopefuls were auditioning for the role of Tommo, the 17-year-old son of Miss September. They were told to arrive wearing school uniform to get into the character.
Gary Barlow said, “we want a proper Northerner to play this role and where better to look than Manchester where there is such an enormous wealth of talent."
The lads, aged from 15 to 23, travelled to the open auditions from across the north. The budding actors were from Sheffield, the Wirral, Blackpool, Chorley, Cheshire and across Greater Manchester from Salford, Warrington, Bolton, Altrincham and Ancoats.
The Girls will première at The Lowry from January 13 to January 30.
