Warwick’s Playbox, which develops theatre for and with young people, has announced a new programme for the rest of the year which includes performing in the United States.

Playbox’s Shakespeare Young Company will be resident in Santa Monica in October and will present a full programme of plays and other events. More details will be released later.

Members of Playbox’s Young Production Company will stage a new play by Toby Quash, The Shadow Roads, which deals with the horrors of World War I. It opens at the Dream Factory, Playbox’s headquarters in Warwick, on Wednesday 2 July.

Juliet Vankay will direct The Secret Garden, Playbox’s first musical for four years, which is based on the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It opens on Wednesday 27 August.

Playbox’s Shakespeare Young Company will present three summer shows before going to America.

The Comedy of Errors opens on Saturday 21 June and tours to Birmingham, Stratford, Coventry and the Bristol Shakespeare Festival.

Playing alongside it will be George Peele’s The Old Wives’ Tale, an Elizabethan supernatural story which will be presented as an outdoor evening fantasy by candlelight.

A third SYC ensemble will create a new, interactive work using the forests in Shakespeare’s plays. It has the working title of Forests and it opens in late June.

For Christmas, Playbox will be presenting Peter Pan which opens at the Dream Factory on 15 December.
