Newcastle's Northern Stage has appointed Kate Denby as Executive Director in succession to Susan Coffer who leaves in February.

Currently Head of Programming and Talent Development at Hull Truck, Denby oversees the theatre’s producing and programming and has led the creation and development of GROW, its artist development programme alongside Artistic Director Mark Babych. She was also actively involved in the development of Hull’s successful bid for UK City of Culture 2017.

A native of the north east, she said, "I am thrilled to be joining Lorne Campbell and the team at Northern Stage. Having grown up in Newcastle, I have always held a particular affection for this theatre, and have been proud to see the adventurous programme being embraced by audiences across the north east.

"I also admire the innovation Northern Stage has shown in using its resources and expertise to support theatre-makers from across the region: it has redefined the company's relationship with the creative sector, and has been an influence on my own approach to programming and artist development at Hull Truck.

"To now have the opportunity to lead one of the North's significant cultural organisations is a great honour. I look forward to working alongside Lorne and the staff, board, artists and audiences of Northern Stage to continue the company's exciting journey."

Lorne Campbell, Artistic Director of Northern Stage said, "I am delighted to be welcoming Kate to Northern Stage as our new Executive Director and Joint Chief Executive.

"I have known Kate through her previous roles with Hull Truck and the Gate Theatre and have always found her brilliant to work with. Kate brings us a wealth of experience in programming, touring and fundraising as well as a bold entrepreneurial spirit that will be a huge asset as we face the challenges ahead.

"As a native of the north east, I am certain she will bring a genuine passion for the culture, communities and audiences of this remarkable region in these challenging times."
