New Artistic Director

Thea Sharrock has been appointed as the Gate's new Artistic Director. Thea will join the theatre in August 2004 and will be programming the its 2004 autumn season. Formerly Artistic Director of Southwark Playhouse, Thea is currently in rehearsal for Peter Hall's second rep season at Bath's Theatre Royal, where she will be directing a new version of Don Juan by Simon Nye and Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward.

Revelations Winner

Christopher Hampton, Jack Bradley, Penny Cherns, Edward Kemp, Tony Meech, Susannah Clapp & Tim Pigott-Smith chose Marieluise as the winner of Revelations, the Gate's 2004 Translation Award. The play is written by Kerstin Specht and the translation is by Rachael McGill.

For a moment, Marieluise Fleisser entranced Brecht, becoming both his lover and protégée, won over 1920s Berlin, endured political censorship and even gained her family's respect. Just for a moment...

Marieluise is the whirlwind story of one woman's triumph over scandal and despair.

Erica Whyman

Marieluise Fleisser (1901-1974) is the author of Purgatory in Ingolstadt and Pioneers in Ingolstadt, both of which were produced at the Gate in 1991, directed by Annie Castledine and Stephen Daldry.

The Gate's production of Marieluise will be directed by Erica Whyman and designed by Soutra Gilmour. It will run from 19th July to 14th August and will be Erica's final production as Artistic Director of the Gate and her fifteenth collaboration with Soutra Gilmour.
