Gaskill Returns to Direct on the London Stage One of the most influential theatre directors of the last half century, William Gaskill, returns to professional theatre to present his first directing project in ten years at the ground breaking Arcola. A cast of ten actors will present an adaptation five stories from Raymond Carver, a writer hailed as the American Chekov.
William Gaskill was the artistic director of the Royal Court between 1965 and 1972, where he directed premieres of plays by an entire generation of writers from David Hare to John Arden, Edward Bond and Arnold Wesker, as well as introducing many of Brechts works to the British theatre going audience. He worked alongside Laurence Olivier as a founding director of the National Theatre from its time at the Old Vic in 1963, and went on to form Joint Stock theatre group with Max Stafford Clark. Carver will be performed as a part of Arcolas summer and autumn season of plays, also including works from other key figures from Gaskills period at the Royal Court and Joint Stock: Max Stafford Clarks highly praised sell out promenade version of Macbeth will return from 1st to 10th September and Jack Shepherds latest play Through a Cloud is also scheduled for its London premiere starring the writer himself in October.
The cast includes Kathryn Pogson, Bruce Alexander and Jack Klaff. Carver runs at the Arcola from 6th July to 6th August (Monday to Saturday at 8 pm, with a Saturday matinee at 3 pm). Tickets £12, £8 concession. No concessions on Saturday. Tuesdays Pay What You Can. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
