Theatre at the Edinburgh Book Festival

Tickets went on sale on Friday morning for the Edinburgh Book Festival, one of the many festivals to hit Scotland's capital during August, and, as always, there are a few events of interest to theatre enthusiasts.

The biggest star name from the British acting profession is Sean Connery, who will be talking on his 78th birthday, together with film maker Murray Grigor, about their book Being A Scot.

From the theatre, the most prominent visitor to the Festival is controversial actor, director and playwright Steven Berkoff, although his event is in the 'food and drink' category.

There are two events based around Shakespeare: actor Ben Crystal presents Shakespeare On Toast and Charles Nicholl looks at overlooked aspects of the playwright's life in The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street.

Playwrights at the festival include Liz Lochhead, talking about what happens to plays when they leave the theatre and become printed literature, Jackie Kay presents her latest poetry collection Darling, Hanif Kureishi talks about his latest novel Something To Tell You and Simon Armitage presents his collection of prose writing Gig: The Life and Times of a Rock-star Fantasist.

Guardian lead theatre critic Michael Billington will discuss his book State of the Nation, looking at post-war Britain and its reflection in the theatre.

In addition to the talks, there are a large number of workshops and masterclasses for writers, including two on writing for radio and several on how to cope with various aspects of life as a writer.

All events are in the temporary buildings in Charlotte Square Gardens between 9 and 25 August, where there are also an adults' and a children's bookshop, coffee shops and a bar. Most authors attend book signings following their events.
