Iraqi Writer Wins 2008 George Devine Award The annual George Devine Award for a new play has been won this year by Iraqi writer Hassan Abdulrazzak for his play Baghdad Wedding, which premiered in July last year at the Soho Theatre. The Award, which has a prize of £10,000, was established in 1966 in memory of the founding Artistic Director of the Royal Court and previous winners include Richard Bean, Edward Bond, Leo Butler, Hanif Kureishi, Mike Leigh, Martin McDonagh, Conor McPherson, Laura Wade and Roy Williams. Abdulrazzak is a 34-year-old postdoctoral researcher in stem-cell biology at Imperial College whose parents fled Iraq when he was eight. The family lived in Egypt for a year and in Algeria for four before finally settling in London, when he was 13. He is currently working on his second play.
