Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and Network Rail have announced the winners of their railway safety poster design competition.

As part of the two-week tour of its railway safety play Off The Level, developed by the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in partnership with Network Rail, the theatre launched a poster design competition.

This was open to all three schools and over 2,500 students who watched the performance and participated in the post-show discussion in September.

Specifically targeting schools close to level crossings, where there is a high risk of incidents, the Off the Level team visited All Hallows, Romsey, Sutton High, Westgate, Broadwater, The Beacon, Hounsdown, Oasis Aadem Mayfield, Richmond Park Connaught, Alesian, Eggars and Ash Manor School between 8 and 17 September.

Education Officer Rob Cann explained, "the idea behind the competition was to encourage the pupils to really think about the vital messages that are conveyed in Off The Level, and then design a poster to highlight the potential dangers around level crossings and how to remain safe when near them and we had a terrific response, with many original ideas".

The winning designs were selected by Lindsay Banks, Community Safety Manager Network Rail and South West Trains, Trevor Banks from Network Rail and Graham Dearman from British Transport Police.

Harvey West scooped first place, while joint second place went to both Douglas Smith and Joseph Kemp, and Ella Dwyer claimed third place.

Lindsay Banks said, "well done to everyone who submitted some fantastic entries. It was really hard to pick the winner.

"Working with Off the Level, we are able to reach groups of young people and explain to them the dangers of misusing level crossings and trespassing on the railway, which well help keep them and others safe in the future".

Off The Level is now one of the figurehead projects within the Yvonne Arnaud's Education department.
