Equity Cuckoo over Edinburgh Nest American actor David Calvitto is well-known for his work as an actor in London and around the world. In recent years, he has received great critical acclaim on projects such as Fatboy, Goner, Horse Country and Americana Absurdum, in which he is currently starring at the new Southwark venue, the Menier Chocolate Factory. The star of numerous award-winning Edinburgh shows including last year's Guy Masterson hit, Twelve Angry Men, which he subsequently followed to Australia and New Zealand, is a deeply worried man. He is supposed to be appearing as Dr Spivey in Guy Masterson's 2004 Edinburgh offering, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, which will subsequently transfer to an as yet unnamed West End venue. At the moment, named cast members, in addition to Calvitto, include Frances Barber, The Office's Mackenzie Crook and US film star, Christian Slater. But there's a problem: U.K. Equity has voiced doubts about whether it will permit Calvitto to appear in London and would rather that the part in Ken Kesey's archetypical American drama was played by an English actor. This would be such a pity as anyone that has seen him in action will know that his is a unique talent. It is to be hoped that Equity will see sense and allow David Calvitto to play the part for which the director has hand-picked him. There can be no doubt that the show will be stronger for such a concession. It would be nice to think that there might be a further benefit to the home stage. It is likely that some lucky British actor might benefit directly from such altruism by getting an opportunity to appear on Broadway, courtesy of Equity's American cousins.
