Aida Young (1920 - 2007) British TV and film producer Aida Young has died at the age of 87. Blanche Marvin writes: The death of this dynamic woman at the age of 87 is a great loss not only to her family but to the film world where she was one of the first female producers to buffer the waves of discrimination and rivalry. The bravery of Aida Young manifested itself in her never-giving-up under the odds, in her determined mind to pursue the course to its end, and to her unwavering loyalty to friends and family. She had that unique capacity to fulfil a lifetimes work in films and television where angels feared to tread but could also maintain a full time relationship with her husband Gideon and her two daughters Ruth and Jane. She found time to produce the films yet be mother and wife to her family plus being a devoted companion to her friends. Be in trouble and you could count on Aida. There was always time she found to care for the suffering of others. Her social consciousness stemmed from an East End background where her parents ran a jewellery and pawn-broker business. She knew what it meant to work your way up the ladder and deal with hardship. It was that experience that gave her heart for others. If you remember Danger Man, or The Invisible Man, or William Tell, or New Adventures of Charlie Chan, it was Aida gaining her technical skill by being production manager. She then went on to producing, again in television, The Covington Cross, Secret Life of Ian Fleming, John and Yoko, The Country Girls, The Bunker, Thief of Bagdad, The Likely Lads, Steptoe and Son Ride Again, Steptoe and Son, Scars of Dracula, Taste the Blood of Dracula and Dracula, many of which became films outside of TV. Directing or assistant directing was also part of her career with such work as: The Quartermass Xperiment, Mantrap, Dark Interval. She became main producer at Hammer Horror Films, in addition to filming Steptoe and Son. Who will not remember this gutsy, courageous woman, half the size of most, but a giant in generosity of spirit who had more of an influence upon all our lives that you may now realise? She leaves behind two devoted daughters, Ruth and Jane, plus her four loving grandchildren whilst her beloved Gideon died several years ago.
