New Northern Stage CommissionNorthern Stage has commissioned a brand new adaptation of Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber, opening on 26th Septembe. When a 17 year old virgin marries an ageing, rich and charismatic Marquis it seems like a fairy tale. He sweeps her up, buys expensive gifts and takes her to his castle overlooking the sea. However, when the Marquis leaves her alone in the castle, with instructions not to go into one specific room, she uncovers a dark secret from his past. Angela Carter's tale is a story of seduction, perversion, blood and love and a shockingly beautiful portrait of the corruption of adolescence. An award-winning group of theatre makers are working on the project. Designer and director Neil Murray (who recently designed Northern Stage's A Christmas Carol and Kneehigh Theatre's Brief Encounter), playwright Bryony Lavery (Frozen) and balletLORENT's Liv Lorent (Angelmoth, MaEternal). The team also includes lighting designer Malcolm Rippeth and film-maker John Alder with whom Murray has worked many times before. The creative team worked with a group of actors in March for one week and presented a work in progress showing. Incorporating a film, music and live action, The Bloody Chamber, a reworking of the fairytale Bluebeard, promises to be a tense, visceral and visually stunning production. The Bloody Chamber (which runs from Friday 26th September to Sat 11th October at 8pm in Satge 2) is strongly recommended for adults only. Contains full male and female nudity and scenes of a violent and sexual nature.
Singer/songwriter joins Gala castDurham's Gala Theatre has announced that local singer-songwriter Katie Doherty will join the cast of its latest in-house production, Get Off At Gateshead, written by NE playwright, Ian Skelton.
26 year-old Katie, originally from the Tees Valley but now a Newcastle resident, was a student on the inaugural year of Newcastle Universitys Folk & Traditional Music degree, graduating in 2005 and continuing her studies with a Masters in performance and composition in 2006. Since then, her career has seen her win the Musicians Benevolent Fund Award for Song Creation, and the 2007 Culture Award for Best Newcomer. Her debut album, Building Bridges, was released to critical acclaim in 2007, and in the same year she worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company as Musical Director for their production of As You Like It.
She joins Get Off At Gateshead to provide an extra dimension to the poignant and moving story of two former lovers from the North East, whose paths cross in later life as a result of family responsibilities. Of her involvement Katie said, I am really attracted to Ians story because of the familiarity of the setting and the issues addressed in the plot. I have been amazed at the way in which my songs have worked alongside the script, despite the fact that the two things have been written completely separately. They both consider how the passage of time can affect the bonds between people, and how they can become distorted without reflection. Get Off at Gateshead runs from Thursday 18th to Saturday 27th September. What's on in the region
