Dan Crawford

King's Head Founder Dies
Dan Crawford, founder of the King's Head Theatre in Islington, has died of cancer at the age of 62. He was an American - from Hackensack, New Jersey - who came to the UK in 1969 with experience in the bar trade and New York fringe theatre. He persuaded the brewery to allow him to lease the dilapidated King's Head (it hadn't been decorated since 1938!) and, on a shoestring, began to develop the backroom into a theatre.

He hosted a wide variety of different kinds of production, thirty of which transferred to the West End and six to Broadway, and many famous names worked on the theatre's stage, including the likes of Corin Redgrave, Angela Richards, Lesley Joseph, Celia Imrie, Leigh Zimmerman and Steven Berkoff.

He is survived by this fourth wife Stephanie and his step-daughter, Katie.

Jerwood Directors Award at the Young Vic
In a change to the established pattern, this year's Jerwood Directors Award at the Young Vic was open to directors of any age who had at least five years experience and could convince the judges that they would benefit from the award. The winners were Topher Campbell (who has worked recently at the Young Vic, Lyric Hammersmith and Royal Court), Paul Hunter (co-founder of Told By An Idiot who recently directed The Firework-Maker's Daughter) and Sacha Wares (work at the Tricycle, Bush and Royal Court).

“The Jerwood Young Directors Award at the Young Vic has been a brilliant means for young directors to gain in confidence and skill and for us to work alongside a generation of new artists," said Young Vic artistic director David Lan. "The whole world of the theatre feels the benefit. Jerwood is always keen to rethink and reposition its interventions. I’m certain that this year’s award will bring new benefits and rewards.”
